World Famous Cyclists

It is a highly subjective task to compare top cyclists because of the nature and unique requirements of the various cycling gigs. There are many great cyclists all over the world that are skilled in various areas of the sport and have different skill sets than some. That’s why this list of the greatest cyclists of all time covers GC contenders, climbers, sprinters, domestics and classic cyclists.

Marianne Vos

The well-rounded Dutch world champion is, hands-down, the greatest female cyclist ever. She displayed her skills in all areas from cyclocross to mountain biking. Vos is an Olympics road race gold medalist and won several World Road Races, women’s Classics, and Grand Tours. Among her titles are: 7 world Cyclocross Championships and 3 World Road Race Championships.

Mark Cavendish

So far, Cavendish has won some Grand Tours titles, Stage Races, One-day Races, and Classics. He is known as the greatest cycling sprinter ever. Among his wins are: 30 Tour de France Stages and 48 Grand Tours stages.

Lance Armstrong

Even though it’s quick to reject against his turnout was tainted, he beat the greatest out there. The American won seven consecutive Tour de France titles – more than any other rider.

Gino Bartali

The Italian became the very first rider to win both the yellow jersey and the king of the Mountains jersey in one Tour – a feat he repeated ten years later. His 170 wins include 2 Tour de France, 3 Giro d’Italia, 3 Tour of Lombardy and 4 Milan-San Remo.

Miguel Indurain

The Spanish rider is one of the greatest individual time-trial cyclists of all time. Indurain also won several stage races, the World Championship Time Trial, and other Classics. His title includes 5 Tour de France and 7 Grand Tours.

Jacques Anquetil

This French road cyclist was the first to win all three Grand Tours. He is most certainly a skilled cyclist and has worked hard for his titles. Among his 200 titles are 4 Super Prestige Pernod International, 5 Tour de France, 8 Grand Tour and 9 Grand Prix des Nations.

Fausto Coppi

He was a well-rounded Italian rider that performed greatly in climbing, time trials, and sprints. He won World Road Championships and other cycling titles. Coppi’s victories include 3 Milan-San Remo wins, 5 Giro d’Italia titles, 5 Giro di Lombardi and 7 Grand Tours wins.

Bernard Hinault

This is one of the greatest cyclists ever. Nicknamed “The Badger”, Frenchman Hinault is the only rider besides Merckx to have won the green, polka dot and yellow jerseys in the Tour de France. His 250 victories include: 5 Classics, 10 Grand Tour and 52 time-trials.

Eddy Merckx

Nicknamed “The Cannibal”, Merckx’s skills in climbing, time-trials, sprinting, and descending are unmatched. The Belgian is the best cyclist of all time. His 445 victories more than most cyclists can ever dream of in their career, he is a true legend. His wins include 5 Tour de France, 5 Giro d’Italia, 7 Milan San Remo, 11 Grand Tour, 19 five Monuments of Cycling victories, 28 Classics and Achieving cycling triple crown by winning Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and the Road World Championships.
